Breast augmentation is the most popular procedure for individuals seeking to enlarge or enhance the appearance of their breasts. During your consultation, your surgeon will show you both saline and silicone implants to choose from and help you make an informed decision that is best for you and your goals. Female board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kristi Hustak, provides breast augmentation to patients in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas.
Both saline and silicone implants feel different, with silicone feeling more like natural breast tissue. Saline implants typically feel firmer than silicone.
Silicone implants look closer to natural breasts, as the gel implants hang over the natural curvature of the breasts similar to real breast tissue. Saline implants usually look rounder and firmer.
The procedure for breast augmentation when using either saline or silicone implants is relatively the same, however the incision site slightly varies. Silicone implants come from the manufacturer already filled with gel material, requiring a larger incision to be inserted into the chest. Saline implants come empty and are only filled once they are placed into the chest, requiring a smaller incision.
Both saline and silicone implants are meant to be long-lasting, and both last about the same amount of time. Regardless of the type of implant used, they will need to be removed or replaced after a number of years. Implant rupture is uncommon, but in the case that this does occur, saline implants are a safer option as the solution will be easily absorbed into the body. With silicone implant ruptures, severe health complications can occur. Rippling and capsular contracture is of equal risk with either type of implant, but is also a less common complication.
