Fatty pockets and sagging skin around the eyelids can give your eyes a tired look and make you appear old. Blepharoplasty, which is a cosmetic surgery to lift the eyelid can diminish this effect, giving your eyes a more young and rested appearance.
Eyelid lift surgery can also help those with vision defects due to some obstruction being caused by the upper eyelids. Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Kristi Hustak provides blepharoplasty to patients in Houston, Texas, and surrounding locations.
Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery that may also provide functional benefits. This procedure is performed on the lower or upper eyelid to treat the following conditions:
Some people suffer from a condition called ptosis which is a droopiness of the upper eyelids. When this combines with loose skin over the eyelid, it makes the eyes appear partly closed even when the person is fully awake. Such persons are a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery.
Patients who have tired eyes are also a good fit for upper eyelid surgery that ‘lifts’ the area to give a youthful appearance. If you have puffy bags under the eyes, the surgeon will advise a lower eyelid blepharoplasty to remove the excess skin.
Based on the anatomical structure of the patient’s eye, and their aesthetic goals, the surgeon recommends surgery of only the upper or lower eyelid or both. In some cases, patients may need a brow lift too to completely remove the saggy appearance.
The surgeon typically uses general anesthesia and performs blepharoplasty on an outpatient basis. The entire surgery takes less than two hours to complete.
After the administration of the anesthetic, the surgeon makes tiny incisions in areas around the eye in such a way that any scars left after recovery stay concealed. For lower lid blepharoplasty, the incision is placed along the line of the lower lash while for upper lid surgery, it is made in the crease of the upper eyelid.
The surgeon excises skin and excess fat from the region around the eyes. They also tighten the muscles below the skin to give the area a toned appearance.
After the blepharoplasty procedure, the surgeon will advise you to get enough rest while keeping your head upright. You will have to use cold compresses to deal with the initial bruising and swelling. Most surgeons also prescribe an ointment to be applied to the operated area to reduce irritation.
While it may be possible to resume work within a week of the surgery, the bruising and inflammation will need more time to resolve. Most patients find that after two weeks of the blepharoplasty procedure, their eyes begin to look rested, younger, and more beautiful.
